「回首向來蕭瑟處﹐歸去﹐也無風雨也無晴。」蘇東坡的這句詞﹐常見人引用﹐引用來共鳴感嘆﹑心情的轉變﹑對過往執著的放下等。
出自《定風波》﹐這最後一句顯現的是事過境遷後的淡然。然而全文讀來更有那不畏時事的瀟灑。
翻譯時面臨言下之意﹐為了兼顧字面上的意思和字裡行間的隱喻﹐費時絞盡腦汁是必定的。有時外文也會有恰當的俚語片語可用﹐但並不表示譯文就此通順一致﹔俚語片語也是有類似文言白話之分的﹐不顧原文文體而混著用也可算是對語文的一種輕慢。
所以﹐以下雖然是把《定風波》譯成英文了﹐但不敢保證品質。

三月七日，沙湖道中遇雨，雨具先去﹔同行皆狼狽，余不覺。已而遂晴，故作此詞。
莫聽穿林打葉聲
何妨吟嘯且徐行
竹杖芒鞋輕勝馬

我想我今天的膽子很大﹐敢拿當代大師的作品下手﹔中文﹐英文及翻譯都不是科班出身的我居然敢英譯余光中先生的新詩﹐膽子肥得可能需要減減肥了。
仗著我這兒來者不是那麼多﹐放縱自己放肆一下。也許不久後我會後悔自己的唐突﹐現在只是在電腦螢幕的這一頭紅著臉不好意思﹐帶著一絲頑皮的蠢蠢欲動。
余光中先生的中英文程度及翻譯功夫是眾所皆知的精湛﹐如要翻譯自己的詩﹐那應該是易如反掌﹐譯作更是能靈活掌握掌握詩詞的精華和深度。
我呢﹐一方面只是手癢﹐一方面是興趣﹔因為成長過程的關係﹐就是喜歡把中文翻成英文﹐把英文翻成中文﹐看看能不能引發不同的感受和新的領悟。
於此先向余先生致謝致敬和道歉﹕感謝先生的作品所帶來的精神啟發﹐對人文發展的貢獻﹐最後是晚生的歉意﹐對於翻譯不及原意之處深深抱歉。
不自覺地在翻譯過程中儘量配合作者的標點符號﹐遂而發現這首新詩似乎頗受英文的影響。
一字之差使得靈魂一躍千里的效果在譯成英文後更是明顯﹕”當我死時”而不是”當我死後”使得熱戀祖國的情操不僅不受時空的限制﹐反而更是活躍﹐而這對中國的熱愛源自根深蒂固鄉情﹐更加突顯戰亂時期遊子有家歸不得的思鄉情懷。
“中國”是家鄉﹐是國家﹐更是五千年文明的代表。十九世紀的中國和二十世紀的新中國有著同樣的根。 “Middle Kingdom” 有傳說的色彩﹐ “China” 是行進中的文明﹐是整體中國的延續。中國的政治太包羅萬象卻說也說不清﹐中國的文明燦爛輝煌﹐並且寬大得容得下也熔得了各式各樣悠關中國的政治。我眼中的中國是以文明掛帥的﹐前進的動力是去蕪存菁﹐有容乃大。
台灣海峽兩岸半個世紀的隔離讓多少人在渴望之際總難以避免絕望的萌芽﹐曾一度以為無法在有生之年回鄉探親祭祖﹐而事實上確實有許多人是抱著此憾而終的。
對於大時代的變化多端﹐人真正能左右的其實極微小﹐該努力的是磨煉自己學會不卑不亢﹐學會謙遜。
今天我的膽兒真肥﹐居然扯上了政治。真的該給膽子減減肥了。

看似簡單﹐卻是一點也不好譯出那稚氣和渺茫之感。嘗試如下。
